225,000 without power in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana after ice storms

More than 225,000 homes and businesses in the Texas and other U.S. South Central states had no electricity December 6 following severe ice storms starting December 5, according to local power utilities.

Oncor, a power distributor in Texas, was one of the hardest-hit utilites with almost 197,700 customers without power, according to reports. Oncor is a unit of privately-held power holding company Energy Future Holdings.

More than 2,500 combined Oncor employees, contractors and employees from other utilities are responding today to the power outages from the winter storm. Crews from utilities as far away as Florida are responding in north Texas to assist with power restoration to Oncor customers.

Other hard hit states include Arkansas and Louisiana. In addition, outages are increasing in the Midwest and Mid Atlantic states as the storm system moves from Texas toward New England.

American Electric Power (AEP) SWEPCO in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana reported 11,100 homes and businesses without electric power. AEP in West Virginia and Virginia reported 4,000 outages. In Oklahoma, AEP reported 2,600 outages. In Ohio and West Virginia, AEP reported 1,000 without power.

Entergy in Arkansas reported 9,300 without power. In Louisiana, Entergy reported 2,100 without power.
