Shuttered California nuclear plant to auction off equipment

Non-radioactive equipment inside the closed San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) in California is being auctioned off.

Machinery Resources International Inc. Auctions is holding the auction March 26-28 online and in person. The public can preview the items for sale on March 24 and 25. Some of the items up for auction include cranes, storage containers, turbine plant cooling water heat exchangers and HVAC equipment.

Plant owners Southern California Edison (SCE) announced in June 2013 that both units would be retired. SONGS had been shut down since January 2012 when a tube inside the Unit 2 steam generator burst, leaking radioactive water.

Inspections found that vibrations were causing the tubes to rub against each other, causing premature wear. Workers found the same wear inside Unit 3 and shut that down as well.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) found that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries used faulty computer modeling that did not accurately predict the behavior of the steam and water in the generators.
