Eaton modernizes power grid in Connecticut city

Sponsored by

Power management company Eaton provided the Third Taxing District of East Norwalk, Connecticut, with electrical engineering services and power distribution equipment for the construction of a new electrical substation facility.

Located at 6 Fitch St., the substation will help the district lower the cost of electricity while enhancing grid stability and meeting growing demand from residents and businesses.

To optimize safety and reliability, Eaton’s Electrical Engineering Services and Systems division helped the district design, install and commission the substation. Completed in December 2013, the project was the first new substation constructed in the district since 1980.

Power management solutions from Eaton and other manufacturers are incorporated in the design of the Fitch Street Substation to safely and reliably reduce incoming voltages from two primary utility power transmission lines. Transformers efficiently scale voltages from dual 115 kV source lines, while providing robust circuit protection and fire resistance to reduce the risk of unplanned outages. Eaton disconnect switches enable substation components to be de-energized to enhance the safety of routine maintenance and are designed to prevent equipment damage when upstream problems are identified.
