Chile opens 115 MW wind power project

Chile's President Michelle Bachelet officially opened the 115 MW El Arrayán wind farm in north-central Coquimbo region (IV), which began full commercial operations in June.

The $300 million project is Chile's largest wind farm, and one of 15 non-conventional renewable energy projects in operation in Coquimbo. Another 14 are in the approval process in the country's environmental evaluation system, a government release said.

Al Arrayán is owned by Pattern Energy (70 percent) and Antofagasta Minerals (30 percent), and supplies the latter's Los Pelambres copper and molybdenum mine.

Coquimbo accounted for 27 percent of Chile's installed renewable energy capacity in June. Between January and July, Chile installed 601 MW of renewable energy capacity, more than twice the total in all 2013.
