Dominican Republic power plant project moves forward

Dominican Republic state power holding company CDEEE received the final environmental license for the construction and operation of the 752 MW Punta Catalina coal-fired power plant.

Environment ministry Mimarena granted the license after analyzing the EIS, according to a release from CDEEE.

The project is expected to cost $1.95 billion and includes twin coal-fired power generators, a coal port and a 345 kV substation, among other facilities.

A Norberto Odebrecht-Tecnimont and Ingeniería Estrella consortium is in charge of construction of the power plant, which is expected to generate power for the next 50 years.

The consortium broke ground on the project last December.

Punta Catalina will help alleviate the Dominican Republic's energy crisis, and create 7,500 direct and 20,000 indirect jobs.
