Brazilian power regulator Aneel has approved the commercial startup of a 75 MW power generating unit at the 3.75 GW Jirau hydroelectric plant in the Amazon Basin, according to Business News Americas.

The turbine is the 38th of 50 due to begin operating at the complex by 2015, according to federal gazette Diário Oficial da União.

Located in Rondônia state, Jirau is being built alongside the 3.15 GW Santo Antônio plant on the Madeira River.

The federal government says the mega-complex is vital to helping Brazil meet future power demand, which is expected to grow by 7 GW/y until 2020.

Jirau's operating consortium Energia Sustentável do Brasil comprises GDF Suez (40 percent), Mitsui (20 percent), Eletrosul (20 percent) and Chesf (20 percent).
