IEEE Conference Program Highlights
The 2008 IEEE PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition scheduled for April 21-24, 2008, will offer attendees the most comprehensive technical and business program of any event serving the power-delivery marketplace in 2008.
The theme of the conference is Powering Toward the Future. This year's program consists of technical poster sessions, focused technical panel sessions, super sessions, instructional tutorial sessions, special interest sessions, an educational track, a special short course, a collegiate program and an exposition that features hundreds of manufacturers who will display the most up-to-date technology and equipment available in the marketplace today. The event also provides technical and companion tours designed to enrich the conference and exposition experience.
The event begins on Monday, April 21, at 6 p.m. with a Conference Reception at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Join your colleagues from around the world at the conference reception that will Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the World's Fair that was held in Chicago in 1933.
The Opening Session, focusing on Confronting and Dealing with the Regulatory Dilemma is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 at 8:00 a.m. in McCormick Place, Ballroom, S-100. The Exposition Hall will open at 10:00 a .m. immediately following the Opening Session.
Technical Program Focus
A robust program of poster and panel sessions is scheduled continuously throughout the event. Highlighting the poster and panel schedule are the following main topics:
Transmission and distribution system planning and implementation
Integration of wind generation and other renewables
Energy storage
Safety, maintenance and operation
Disaster/emergency response
Power engineering education
Dynamic performance of transmission systems
FACTS and HVDC
Power quality
Protective relaying
Transformers, circuit breakers, cables, insulators, switchgear, fuses, towers, poles and conductors
Electric machines and drives in distribution systems
Cyber security
Substation and distribution automation
Application software for power systems
In addition, five Super Sessions are focused on the following subjects: Aging Workforce-Overcoming the Technical Talent Challenge; The Smart Grid; Blackouts and System Stability; Disaster Response and Recovery and Energy and the Environment. The five sessions will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, April 22, 23, and 24. Each session will explore each one of these topics in-depth.
Tutorials scheduled for Monday April 21, Wednesday April 23 and Thursday, April 24 include: An Overview of the NESC and its 2007 Changes; Static VAR Compensation; DNP3 Communications I; DNP3 Communications II; Lessons Learned-Smart Meter Deployment; Use and Application of Optical Instrument Transformers; Secondary Power Distribution Networks and Engineers Ethics.
The conference also offers Special Interest Sessions, focusing on in-depth issues that are timely and have a high level of interest to attendees; a Special Short Course focusing on the subject of Power Systems Basics for Non-Engineering Professionals; an Educational Track designed to provide refresher materials for attendees and Special Info-Sessions that are conducted by exhibitors and allow attendees to gather information and ask questions of the experts as they demonstrate and explain new and exciting dimensions of their business in an uninterrupted setting.
Collegiate Program
The conference also offers students seeking to join the power engineering profession a special Collegiate Program. The Collegiate/GOLD activities connect students and recent graduates with experts in the industry. Undergraduate students, graduate students and graduates of the last decade are invited to participate in the Collegiate/GOLD program. Highlights of the program will include a collegiate poster session with prizes, a Collegiate/GOLD reception, a collegiate job fair, an interactive industry roundtable session, an industry-led tour of the exhibit hall and a Collegiate/GOLD luncheon program. All inquiries about the Collegiate/GOLD program should be addressed in an e-mail format to Alex Flueck: flueck@iit.edu.
Technical Tours
Attendees to the Conference and Exposition can add to their participation at the event by reserving a space on a Technical Tour. Four tours are being offered. They include: ComEd's West Loop Substation, the Twin Groves Wind Farm, ComEd's Operations Control Center and Argonne National Laboratory. Attendees are urged to register for the tours early as space is limited and at a premium.
A World Class Exposition
The Exposition Hall will feature hundreds of exhibiting companies and millions of dollars of the latest technology and services. The products that will be on display include: monitoring and testing equipment, system protection, including breakers and relays, switchgear, communication and control, SCADA, EMS, distribution automation, demand-side management, AM/FM, GIS, GPS, customer information systems, computer hardware and software systems, substation equipment, transmission system equipment, engineering services, meters and metering devices, overhead distribution equipment and services, underground distribution equipment and services, mechanical construction and maintenance, and fleet management equipment, training systems and services, transformers, outdoor lighting, tools, rope and safety equipment, wire and cable, and consulting and contracting services.
Social Events. Several opportunities will be available to all attendees to network with colleagues from around the world. In addition to the conference reception on Monday evening, the Conference and Exposition will hold a Networking Reception on Wednesday, April 23 and a Closing Ceremony and Reception on Thursday, April 24 where attendees will enjoy food and beverage and preview the next big celebration scheduled for 2010 in New Orleans.
