62.5 µm Optical FiberOFS Specialty Photonics Division has introduced a 62.5 µm core optical fiber, expanding on its HCS optical fiber family. The OFS fiber, cable and connector system for use in generating stations, substations, and transmission/distribution lines offers distinct advantages over copper. These include high bandwidth, which allows more data to be transmitted longer distances, immunity to EMI/RFI, more secure communications, lighter weight cables, and electrical isolation in the event of a ground fault.
This design combines the ruggedness of 62.5/200 µm (core/cladding) fiber with ease of connectorization in the field. The entire system is ideally suited for industrial environments, and the cable design is especially suited to installation environments with high pull forces. The 62.5 µm HCS fiber can be cabled and pre-terminated in the factory or field terminated with ST and SMA connectors quickly, reliably and cost-effectively, with minimal training, using the OFS “crimp and cleave” process. It offers a 125°C temperature rating, high proof test level, and superior resistance to moisture.

EZ Stop II Tie-back Lanyard with Rebar HooksDBI-SALA, a Capital Safety brand, introduces the EZ Stop II Tie-back Lanyard with rebar hooks. The new ANSI Z359.1-2007 rebar hooks feature 3,600-lb gates, allowing them to be used in tie-back applications with a floating D-ring, giving the user greater versatility on the job.
The EZ Stop II is available in a single or twin-leg tie-back model with a standard snap hook, aluminum rebar hook, flat steel rebar hook or carabiner ends. A floating D-ring provides an adjustable tie-back point so the lanyard can be used around various structures at a job site. The EZ Stop II lanyard utilizes a controlled tearing action when subjected to fall arrest forces, limiting arresting forces to no more than 900 lbs. Abrasion resistant tubular webbing covers an additional layer of polyester web, for the ultimate in durability.
Prior to the introduction of ANSI Z359.1-2007 compliant snap hooks, large rebar hooks were not approved for tie-back applications. Connection of rebar type hooks with large gate openings to standard size D-rings is not restricted with the new 3,600-lb gated snap hooks, provided the snap hook or carabiner is free to align with the applied load as intended.
The EZ Stop II Tieback Lanyard with rebar hooks meets all applicable industry standards, including OSHA and ANSI Z359-2007.

Fiber Optic Distributed Strain and Temperature SensorOZ Optics now offers the Foresight series of fiber optic distributed strain and temperature sensors. The new sensor system provides high resolution and accurate strain and temperature monitoring over very long distances. The sensor uses standard optical telecommunications fiber, thereby leveraging the enormous economies of scale from fiber optic communication networks. Brillouin sensors are excellent for detecting corrosion, buckling and micro cracks in large structures.
The new Fiber Optic Distributed Strain and Temperature Sensor (DSTS) uses Brillouin scattering in optical fibers to measure changes simultaneously in both temperature and strain along the length of a standard, low-cost optical fiber. By wrapping or embedding a fiber inside a structure, users can detect when the structure is being strained or heated/cooled and allow the problem to be corrected before failure occurs. The sensing fiber can also be used for telecommunications.
The sensing technology gives both temperature and strain readings along the length of the fiber, with spatial resolution as short as 5cm.
The system is fully compatible with the communications and monitoring solutions found in OZ Optics’ Optical Network Safeguard (OZ-Guard) system. Escalating alarms, starting with the field engineer and rising to any level specified by the system operator, are a standard feature of the system.
