Duct Hunter Detectable RoddersKnown for its Buddy System of fiberglass conduit rodders and fish tapes, Jameson announced a new line of detectable rodders this year. The Duct Hunter rodders enable underground systems such as sewer lines, gas pipes and buried cable to be accurately located without disturbing overlying soil.
Utilizing the same rugged steel construction and fiberglass core rod as the Buddy System, the Duct Hunters are made detectable by a continuous solid copper wire at the center of the fiberglass core. By connecting a signal transmitter to the rod end, the copper within the rod is energized with an electromagnetic signal. The signal then travels from the energized rod, through the earth and to a ground spike connected to a transmitter. The energized rod acts like an antenna, detectable from above ground through the use of a hand-held signal receiver.

Fiber Optic Distributed Strain and Temperature SensorsOZ Optics now offers the Foresight series of fiber optic distributed strain and temperature sensors. The new sensor system provides high resolution and accurate strain and temperature monitoring over very long distances. The sensor uses standard optical telecommunications fiber, thereby leveraging the enormous economies of scale from fiber optic communication networks. Brillouin sensors are excellent for detecting corrosion, buckling and micro cracks in large structures.
The new Fiber Optic Distributed Strain and Temperature Sensor (DSTS) uses Brillouin scattering in optical fibers to measure changes simultaneously in both temperature and strain along the length of a standard, low-cost optical fiber. By wrapping or embedding a fiber inside a structure, users can detect when the structure is being strained or heated/cooled and allow the problem to be corrected before failure occurs. The sensing fiber can also be used for telecommunications.
The sensing technology gives both temperature and strain readings along the length of the fiber, with spatial resolution as short as 5cm.
The system is fully compatible with the communications and monitoring solutions found in OZ Optics’ Optical Network Safeguard (OZ-Guard) system. Escalating alarms, starting with the field engineer and rising to any level specified by the system operator, are a standard feature of the system.

Handheld Voltage ProbeHD’s VP-1 Voltage Probe is a handheld voltage detector that can be used from 50V up to 21kV AC. For secondary voltages from 50V to 600V, use it as a direct contact voltage detector. It can also be used as a direct contact voltage detector on primary voltages from 600V up to 21kV and as a proximity voltage detector for voltages exceeding 21kV with appropriately rated electrical insulating gloves. The VP-1 gives a flashing red light and beeping indication when voltage is detected. Test exposed metallic surfaces and conductors, unshielded primary voltage cable insulation, primary voltage joint and termination test points for the presence of voltage.

Integrated CWDM for the Mini Fiber NodeAntronix has integrated CWDM functionality into the Antronix Fiber Node (AFN). This feature provides a 2:1 reduction in the number of fibers required for bi-directional communications, resulting in an overall savings in system cost. The return optical transmitter employs an isolated DFB laser with a choice of different operating wavelengths.
The AFN transports a full complement of video, data and telephony and provides conversion to/from RF. The device enables a service provider to cost-effectively improve performance by bringing fiber closer to the end user. It is optimized for use in MDU, business, education, campus, government and residential environments. The AFN’s small size and robust housing allow it to be placed in most locations that provide limited space, such as NID boxes.
The AFN is available in two versions: the full-featured H-series, providing a constant +38 dBmV RF output over a wide optical input, and the more economical L-series, offering a +28 dBmV RF output.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle SystemTerex and a major utility fleet are currently working together to optimize a new, easy-to-implement plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) system for the utility industry. Simply put, this system will make it easier for all utility truck operators to “go green.”
Like other hybrid systems on the market, Terex’s new PHEV vehicle provides the ability to operate the aerial lift without running the engine to save fuel, reduce emissions, and eliminate noise in residential areas.
It is also self-contained and capable of working on virtually any stock chassis. Even old, faithful trucks can utilize this hybrid technology and drastically reduce fuel consumption. Because it doesn’t interface with the transmission, it won’t increase the engine load, reducing wear and tear and enabling fleet owners to use smaller, more fuel-efficient engines.
Recharging the Terex system after hours requires only a standard 110V, 25-amp outlet. This safe, simple and convenient solution recharges the system’s Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery in eight hours—making it easy to use standard off-peak grid power.
The simplicity of the Terex PHEV system makes it far easier for utility trucks to utilize environmentally friendly hybrid technology. The entire system functions independently—so the mechanical integrity of the truck remains intact. Standard off-the-shelf components like the PTO and pump are time-tested, reliable and safe to provide operators with peace of mind. The separate motor generator adds to the simplicity and reduces the cost of the system. Altogether, the system is expected to add between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds of weight to the aerial device.
