A new pipe-splitting technology is enabling gas utilities across the southern United States to replace thousands of feet of plastic gas service lines and mains. A slope repair project in Ohio called for more than 200 drilled shafts in challenging soil conditions: clay on top with rock underneath. In "Taking Care of Ohio's Infrastructure" on page 23, Debby Keegan explains how a powerful and efficient drill rig from Bay Shore Systems helped the contractor not only accomplish the difficult project quickly but also save on cement costs.
To document and manage their assets, telephone utility companies will often send crews to manually survey poles, using GPS units and tablets to capture data and images. To speed up that process, LiDARUSA developed a vehicle-based technology that could capture pole information from a moving car. But, with the constantly varying distances between the vehicle and the poles, not to mention the changing lighting conditions, the camera proved to be a challenge. In Estes Park, Colo., where the terrain is mountainous and poles are hard to access, installing fiber-optic cable for its 6,200 residents posed a difficult challenge for the local power and communications utility.
