Alstom buys U.K. tidal energy company

French heavy engineering group Alstom acquired U.K.-based Tidal Generation from U.K. power systems group Rolls Royce

French heavy engineering group Alstom acquired U.K.-based Tidal Generation from U.K. power systems group Rolls Royce.

The agreement for the acquisition of TGL was signed in September 2012 and the completion of the deal was subject to several conditions, including the successful installation of a 1 MW tidal turbine at the European Marine Energy Centre's (EMEC) full-scale tidal test site in Scotland.

The turbine was successfully installed on January 24, 2013.

Following the completion of the acquisition, which is part of Alstom's strategy to expand its portfolio of renewable energy projects, TGL has been rebranded as Alstom.

The 1-MW turbine will be tested in various conditions over a period of 18 months within the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) commissioned and co-funded Reliable Data Acquisition Platform for Tidal (ReDAPT) consortium project. The next step after completing the tests and gathering all relevant data will be to install pilot arrays prior to launching commercial production.
