A security officer patrolling the area outside the Watts Bar nuclear power plant in Spring City exchanged gunfire with an individual, according to a release from the NRC

A security officer patrolling the area outside the Watts Bar nuclear power plant in Spring City exchanged gunfire with an individual, according to a release from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

The NRC Region II staff began monitoring the Watts Bar plant near Spring City, about 60 miles southwest of Knoxville, after the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), which operated the plant, notified the NRC of the incident, according to reports.

"There was no threat to public safety during the incident and no threat to the security of the plant due to the location outside the plant perimeter. An investigation is underway," according to a TVA statement.

The incident occurred about a quarter mile outside the plant's protected area. Watts Bar plant officials declared an unusual event, the lowest of the NRC's four emergency classifications.
