Linde carbon capture project wins DOE research grant
Linde's pilot plant, to be built at the National Carbon Capture Center in Wilsonville, Alabama, is targeted to be operational by early 2014
Murray Hill, N.J., August 18, 2011 — Linde LLC, a member of The Linde Group, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to receive $15 million for the advancement of carbon dioxide capture technologies.
Linde's pilot plant, to be built at the National Carbon Capture Center in Wilsonville, Alabama, is targeted to be operational by early 2014. This post-combustion capture facility will test CO2 scrubbing solutions to reduce the energy consumption and cost of advanced carbon capture and separation systems for coal-fired power plants.
The pilot plant will be designed to capture at least 90 percent of the CO2 generated, at a lower capture cost than today's technologies, which can add up to 80 percent to the cost of producing electricity. This is in line with the DOE's stated goal of achieving a capture cost of no more than 35 percent.
This larger post-combustion pilot plant will build on the extensive experience Linde gained from the initial technology demonstration facility in Niederaussem, Germany, where, since 2009, Linde has tested new CO2 scrubbing solvents in collaboration with utility supplier RWE and chemicals company BASF. Post-combustion capture technologies offer great near-term potential for reducing CO2 emissions, as they can be retrofitted to existing power plants.
