AEP to complete construction of Dresden natural gas plant

Columbus, Ohio, January 21, 2011 — American Electric Power will accelerate the construction process of a natural gas-fired power plant near Dresden, Ohio.

The partially constructed plant was purchased in 2007 by AEP through its AEP Generating Co. unit from Dresden Energy, a unit of Dominion.

AEP expects the plant to be operational during the first quarter of 2012. When completed, the Dresden plant will be a nominal 580-MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle plant and will create about 25 permanent jobs. While under construction, about 300 temporary jobs will be created.

AEP is one of the largest electric utilities in the U.S., delivering electricity to more than 5 million customers in 11 states. AEP ranks among the nation's largest generators of electricity, owning nearly 38,000 MW of generating capacity in the U.S.

AEP also owns the nation's largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes more 765-KV extra-high voltage transmission lines than all other U.S. transmission systems combined.
