GridWise Alliance announces new chairman of the board
He succeeds Guido Bartels, general manager of Global Energy and Utilities for IBM, who has served as the alliance chairman since January 2007
Washington, D.C., January 14, 2011 — The GridWise Alliance announced that Bob Shapard, chairman and CEO of Oncor, the Dallas-based electricity transmission and distribution company, will serve as the next chairman of its board of directors.
He succeeds Guido Bartels, general manager of Global Energy and Utilities for IBM, who has served as the alliance chairman since January 2007.
“The GridWise Alliance board of directors is pleased to have Bob Shapard, a highly respected industry leader, as the next chair of the alliance,” said outgoing Chairman Guido Bartels. “Mr. Shapard has an extensive background in the energy, electricity and utility industries both in the United States and internationally. In addition, he brings experience from other major industries including oil, mining and health care. His broad knowledge and widely recognized leadership skills will help guide the Alliance into the next phase of its strategic growth.”
“I am proud of the tremendous strides our organization has taken during my time as chairman of the alliance,” Bartels added. “Over the past four years, our membership has increased eightfold, and we have become the premier thought leader on smart grid, both in the U.S. and around the globe. As I continue to serve on the board of directors, I look forward to working with Mr. Shapard as he leads the organization to new heights. ”
Under Shapard’s leadership of Oncor, the company has quickly become one of the nation’s leaders in deploying advanced grid technologies, including deployment of more than 1.5 million advanced meters, hundreds of smart meters and other equipment. The company is also the largest builder of new transmission lines that will support the largest expansion of renewable energy in the U.S.
Shapard will begin his two-year term as GridWise Alliance Chairman effective immediately. Bartels will continue to serve as Chairman of the Global Smart Grid Federation, an international organization to promote best practices and to help accelerate the deployment of smart grid around the world. The GridWise Alliance and six other national smart grid organizations officially launched the Global Smart Grid Federation in September 2010.
