August 17, 2012 — Thai general contractor Ch Karnchang is working on the 1.26-GW Xayaburi hydropower project in northern Laos and will start its construction this year.

The project is opposed by environmentalists and communities near the Mekong River. In July, the Laotian government said its development had been stopped for further environmental impact studies.

However, CK's CEO Plew Trivisvavet said the company had already started works on the $3.8 billion project and had not received an official note from the Laos government to suspend works.

The plant is projected to start operation at the beginning of 2019. CK expects to get other infrastructure projects such as roads, dams and wastewater treatment projects in Myanmar and Vietnam.
