Utility picks Active Power for 415-volt data center design

The utility deployed the critical backup power equipment at its data center facility in North America late last year to provide both power conditioning and protection to the mission critical site

Austin, Texas, January 26, 2012 — Active Power, a manufacturer of continuous power and infrastructure solutions, was selected by a utility company for four of its high efficiency CleanSource 1000 kVA uninterruptible power supply systems.

The utility deployed the critical backup power equipment at its data center facility in North America late last year to provide both power conditioning and protection to the mission critical site.

The customer set out to bring online an energy efficient, resilient and environmentally conscious data processing facility. To accomplish this, the customer chose a 415-volt/240 volt power design instead of the North America standard 480 volt.

This design approach eliminates voltage transformation at the power distribution unit level and the need for additional transformation equipment, resulting in improvements to overall data center energy efficiency.

To help meet design requirements, Active Power configured its CleanSource UPS to 415 volt and secured Underwriter Laboratories (UL) certification on the system. The system also underwent a shaker table test to meet stringent seismic code requirements due to the location of the data center.
