SMUD's SolarShares program allows its customers to use locally generated solar power in their homes even if they don't have solar panels installed on their property. SMUD, whose service area covers 900 square miles, built its first utility-scale solar array at Rancho Seco in 1984, which generated enough electricity to power 2,200 single-family homes or 3.2 MW.
