India interconnects southern power grid with 765 kV transmission line
With this interconnection, the Indian power system became one of the largest operating synchronous grids in the world
India has connected its southern power grid with the national grid in an effort to relieve power shortages in the southern part of India. It cost the company $154 million to set up the system.
Power Grid Corp. of India has energized Raichur-Sholapur transmission line that has been interconnected with the national grid. The Raichur-Sholapur 765KV single-circuit transmission line has thereby achieved the one nation-one grid-one frequency system.
With this interconnection, the Indian power system became one of the largest operating synchronous grids in the world with about 232 GW of installed power generation capacity.
Synchronous integration of the southern grid with the rest of the national power grid will not only augment the inter-regional power transfer capacity of states in the south, but also relieve the congestion in some transmission corridors. The Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh regions have been particularly troubled by power shortages.
PGCIL, the central transmission utility, is engaged in power transmission business with the mandate for planning, co-ordination, supervision and control over interstate transmission systems and operation of the national and regional power grids. It is also in the telecom business and offers consultancy services.
