Brazil approves nearly 5 GW of renewable energy

Wind farms account for 3.717 GW, biomass-fired thermal power 658 MW and hydropower 533 MW

Brazil's mining and energy ministry said Wednesday it approved the construction of 180 renewable power projects totaling 4.9 GW in the first half of 2014, according to Business News Americas.

The power plants — comprising wind energy, biomass and hydropower — will require investments of $8.3 billion, the ministry said in a statement. All are due online by January 2018.

Wind farms account for 3.717 GW, biomass-fired thermal power 658 MW and hydropower 533 MW.

"The plants will add 2.417 average GW of physical guarantee to the grid," the ministry said.

According to the statement, 2.256 average GW were contracted on Brazil's regulated market during auctions held last year.
