Chile to study impact of transmission interconnection
CNE plans to have the interconnection complete by 2020 as part of President Michelle Bachelet's 2014-18 energy agenda
Chile's national energy commission (CNE) issued a call for a study that evaluates the socioeconomic impact of a trunk line transmission interconnection project that would link the northern SING and central SIC grids.
Offers are due September 25, according to Business News Americas.
CNE plans to have the interconnection complete by 2020 as part of President Michelle Bachelet's 2014-18 energy agenda, which seeks to get the public more involved in the planning of generation and transmission projects.
The need to expand trunk line capacity is especially urgent in Chile, where a non-conventional renewable energy (NCRE) boom has tightened transmission bottlenecks, particularly on the SIC's northern section.
Experts say that during peak NCRE production hours, Chile's transmission infrastructure is unable to transport all of the output — particularly from photovoltaic parks and wind farms — to offtakers, causing spot prices to plummet.
