Utility safety: ABB has extended its SafeGear HD arc resistant switchgear product line with an offering of a 4000 A continuous current rating. SafeGear HD, as with the entire SafeGear product line, provides ABB customers a reduced product footprint and unmatched safety and reliability that maximizes uptime and provides lower total cost of ownership. The short overall equipment height of SafeGear HD reduces building size requirements for further customer cost savings. SafeGear HD uses ABB¹s ADVAC breaker to ensure continued superior performance.

In addition to the 4000 A, 63 kA rating, SafeGear HD incorporates ABB's Is-Limiter fault current limiting device. This unique technology addresses system applications with high short circuit availability where the alternative is a costly complete system redesign.

SafeGear HD provides enhanced safety with Type 2B accessibility, 0.5 s arc duration, Delrin arc snuffing PT/CPT contact design, multi-point latch front doors and a separate low voltage compartment. In order to minimize footprint, SafeGear HD is offered in a two-high breaker configuration with an overall footprint of 36 in. W x 112 in. D x 95 in. H. In addition, SafeGear HD is UL/CSA certified, designed for ABB’s SmartRack remote racking device and is fully supported by ABB Service.

“We are excited to offer our customers the 4000 A continuous current rating extension for SafeGear HD,” says Terry Neighbours, Product Management Manager for ABB’s Medium Voltage business. “This product line extension provides our customers with a safe solution for high duty requirements. SafeGear HD keeps with ABB¹s tradition of providing the smallest, safest and most reliable arc resistant switchgear on the market at any rating.”

This announcement was made at the ABB Automation & Power World conference and exhibition, ABB’s bi-annual customer event held this year in Houston.
