Utility safety: Arkema Inc. announces that Kynar® 705 polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has been developed to address the growing need for high performance flame resistant fibers.

It is a polymer highly suited for ASTM E84, the Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, and NFPA 262, the Standard Method of test for Flame Travel and Smoke of Wire and Cables for use in Air-Handling Spaces.

The new homopolymer grade of Kynar® 705 resin has a limiting oxygen index of 70, which means it will not support combustion below 70 percent oxygen concentration. There are many techniques to improve the flame resistance of polymers. The chemistry of Kynar® PVDF allows exceptional flame resistance without the need of additives or post treatment.

“Kynar® 705 homopolymer is a high flow resin recently developed for low denier fiber applications,” said Sean M. Stabler, Arkema’s Business Development Engineer for fiber applications. “This grade can easily be manufactured into spunbond nonwovens and multifilaments, which can then be converted into staple fiber nonwovens or into a woven product.”

Many other Kynar® PVDF filament fiber grades have been on the market for many years. Kynar® 710 and Kynar® 720 are often used for mono- and multi-filaments of 10 mil diameter. Kynar® 740 is used for medium diameter monofilament diameters ranging from 5-50 mils. Kynar® 760 and Kynar®v 460 are used for large diameter fibers, or sometimes referred to as rods, from 15-125 mils. Of course, the specific grade of resin chosen often depends on the manufacturing process used. Kynar® EX-AD 3000 is a compatible process aide developed to lubricate the spinning head orifices to improve melt drawability and reduce extrusion defects, such as melt fracture.

Kynar® PVDF is used for automotive, chemical processing, industrial filtration, air and water filtration, woven fabrics and textiles, electrical wire and cable jacketing, and fiber optics to serve high performance applications requiring high thermo mechanical properties and excellent chemical, flame, and smoke resistance.
