The ISO 9001 standard is recognized globally as the world’s most comprehensive standard on quality management practices for businesses, irrespective of sector. It provides companies with principles that ensure a consistent and effective approach to manufacturing and quality management. ISO 9001’s primary purpose is to provide organizations with useful, internationally recognized models for operating a quality management system. ISO 9001:2008 is the current version of this standard.
Companies who earn ISO 9001 certification have demonstrated to the satisfaction of an independent third-party auditor an ability to reliably provide products that meet customer and regulatory requirements. More than 50,000 North American organizations are certified to the ISO 9001 standard.
ISO 9001 was published in 1987 by the International Organization for Standardization, a worldwide federation of national standards bodies, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The organization was founded in 1946 to develop a common set of standards for manufacturing, trade and communications. Today more than 90 countries are members, each with a representative. The U.S. representative is the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
