Quietly Successful: New GE TP-1 Transformers meet TP-1-2002 energy efficiency standard, offer up to 10-decibel noise reduction and 4-year ROI

GE Consumer & Industrial's new TP-1 Transformers are 100 percent compliant with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association's (NEMA's) TP-1 energy efficiency standard. Each GE TP-1 transformer offers significant improvements over comparable same-size, non-TP-1 units, including an up to 10-decibel noise reduction, an owner payback via energy savings in an estimated four years and a two-year warranty.

100-percent Compliant with NEMA TP-1-2002

GE's TP-1 Transformers, including the Transformor line of transformers, were available on or before January 1, 2007, the deadline when federal law prohibits manufacturers from producing transformers of 15,000 volt-amps (15kVA) or larger in the United States. NEMA TP-1-2002 establishes efficiency levels for single-phase and three-phase transformers by kVA size.

The estimated four-year payback of incremental TP-1 costs through energy savings is based on a 75,000 volt–amp (75kVA) transformer at a 38.6 percent average load and electricity cost of 10 cents per kilowatts an hour (kWh).

Testing drives quality

"We rigorously test GE transformers at our new state-of-the art manufacturing line employing advanced test equipment," says Forsythe. "TP-1 Transformers must meet a number of standards to guarantee the highest initial quality. We even test for noise. This allows us to ship our quietest transformer ever at up to 10 decibels lower than same–size non-TP-1 offerings."

GE tests its TP-1 Transformers for:
- Shorts and coil integrity to ensure high initial quality and years of trouble-free operation;
- Current and loss to ensure peak efficiency, low noise and the lowest operating cost possible;
- Voltage to ensure that input and output voltages are exactly as specified;
- Impedance to ensure the transformer is producing clean power that's building- and equipment-friendly; and
- Noise to ensure that the transformer is one of GE's quietest ever.

"We maintain a complete history of our transformer tests to better enable us to answer customer questions or help solve any future difficulty," say Forsythe. "Customers will also have peace of mind knowing they are backed by a new two–year warranty, up from one-year for non-TP-1 transformers."

Along with NEMA TP-1-2002 energy efficiency compliancy, noise reduction, payback opportunities and a two-year warranty, certain models of GE's TP-1 Transformers also offer:
- Weld-less coil termination design to eliminate weld splatter, producing a cleaner product and less chance of shorts;
- Spray-on core varnish is non-dipped to convey quality construction
- Improved exterior packaging includes rigid edge protectors and a protective top cover to protect from in-transit or site damage.
