Mitsubishi Electric opens transformer factory in Memphis

The $200 million plant is the company's first North American facility for industrial shell-type power transformers

Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. opened its first North American large transformer manufacturing facility in Memphis, Tennessee.

The $200 million plant is the company's first North American facility for industrial shell-type power transformers and is located on 97 acres along the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tenn.

The 307,000 square-foot facility will produce shell-type power transformers to be used as generator step-up transformers, step-down power transformers and autotransformers with capacities of up to 1,500 MVA (3,000 MVA bank) and operating voltages from 161 kV to 765 kV.

The facility will employ 275 as peak capacity, with 65 men and women working at time of opening, according to Mitsubishi.
