Massive power outage strikes northern India

India's power minister said power is now restored to about 60 percent of customers in the northern region

July 30, 2012 — Darkness swept across seven states in India July 30, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir.

India's power minister said power is now restored to about 60 percent of customers in the northern region.

Reasons for the grid failure are not known, but officials say they are looking into the matter.

Officials from the state-run Uttar Pradesh State Power Corp. said that the power grid collapsed after some states drew more power than they were permitted to in an attempt to meet the rising summer electricity demand.
