While other pullers include heavy cylinders, massive bases and weighty chains, the TIIGER, INC. puller consists of four lightweight components: a 57-pound cylinder, a swivel chain hook assembly, 1/2-inch alloy chain, and base plate. These pieces fit in a truck’s toolbox, are easily carried to jobsites and can be quickly assembled.
Here’s how it works:
STEP-BY-STEP POLE PULLER OPERATION
1) SECURE THE POLE WITH THE BOOM OF A TIIGER-I MINI-DERRICK OR OTHER DERRICK TRUCK.
The derrick is used for removing the pole only after it has been loosened by the puller.
2) PLACE THE OPTIONAL POLE PULLER PAD AT THE BASE OF THE POLE.
This custom-designed pad is made of 2-ply HDPE (high density polyethelyne plastic) board. It provides a strong yet flexible base to distribute the tremendous downward force of the pole puller. This pad will increase pulling efficiency when soft ground conditions exist.
3) SET THE BASE PLATE ON THE POLE PULLER PAD, POSITIONING IT WITHIN THE FOUR LOCATOR PEGS.
This high-strength, lightweight base plate will safely absorb the force generated by the cylinder. The pad’s pegs are designed to capture the base plate and puller assembly, preventing it from pushing away from the pole.
4) PLACE THE CYLINDER ON THE BASE PLATE WITH COUPLERS FACING AWAY FROM THE POLE. MAKE SURE THE CYLINDER IS SEATED ON THE CENTERING BAR.
The two carrying handles allow the 57-pound cylinder to be easily carried by one man to even the most difficult job sites. It will generate 50,120 pounds of lift with 2,800 psi of input pressure, providing ample force to remove even the most stubborn poles. TIIGER, INC.’s optional gas powered hydraulic pump will provide a full 2,800 psi at remote job sites, or you can multiply your truck’s psi by 17.9 to calculate other lift capacities.
5) PICK UP THE SWIVEL CHAIN HOOK ASSEMBLY BY THE LIFTING TABS AND LOWER IT ONTO THE CYLINDER UNTIL IT SEATS ON THE SHOULDER AT THE BASE OF THE CYLINDER.
The assembly has several unique design features. Its non-slip faceplate is designed with five angled teeth to penetrate the pole for efficient lifting. Also, the design configuration allows for the lowest possible point of chain attachment, eliminating the need for a second chain. Furthermore, the swivel’s pivoting design allows for the use of a lighter weight 1/2-inch alloy chain. Finally, the assembly, like the rest of TIIGER, INC. manufactured parts, uses high-strength steel providing a 3-1/2:1 safety factor without increased weight.
6) INSTALL THE CHAIN WITH MINIMUM SLACK.
Six-foot standard lengths of chain are provided with the pole puller, but lengths up to 9 feet have been effectively used in the field.
7) INSTALL THE OPTIONAL BACK PLATE BETWEEN THE POLE AND CHAIN, OPPOSITE THE SWIVEL CHAIN HOOK ASSEMBLY.
Sized and shaped for minimum weight and maximum effect, the back plate has five teeth to pierce and grab the pole easily. The use of this accessory increases puller efficiency by reducing chain roll and slippage.
8) RELEASE THE LATCH ALLOWING THE CHAIN HOOKS TO DROP.
The angled motion, down and away from the pole, removes any remaining chain slack. This feature, when combined with use of the back plate, will make every inch of the puller’s upward motion work to dislodge the pole. The pole puller assembly has a firm bite on the pole, providing efficient lift rather than motion wasted on tensioning the chain.
9) CONNECT HYDRAULIC HOSES TO THE TOP AND BOTTOM COUPLERS ON THE CYLINDER.
10) OPERATE THE CYLINDER TO ITS FULL 16-INCH EXTENSION AND STOP.
Remember to allow the puller to do the lifting work. The derrick boom is only to capture and stabilize the pole as it is lifted out of the ground by the puller.
11) RETRACT THE CYLINDER, MAKING SURE THE SWIVEL CHAIN HOOK ASSEMBLY FOLLOWS THE CYLINDER DOWN AS IT LOWERS.
It may be necessary to tap the swivel chain hook assembly and optional back plate to dislodge their teeth from the pole. The lifting ears of the swivel chain hook assembly (11a) and the top of the back plate (11b) have been designed as appropriate places to do this.
12) REPEAT THE LIFTING PROCEDURE UNTIL THE POLE IS FREE, ADDING SLACK TO THE CHAIN AS REQUIRED BY THE TAPERED BUTT OF THE POLE.
If the chain becomes too tight to unhook, it can be released by simply pulling a cotter pin and removing a chain hook. The chain can then be installed with proper slack. The problem has been solved easily without heavy lifting. When used correctly and consistently, a TIIGER, INC.
