AES Corp.'s unit AES Alamitos is now building a 640 MW gas-fired power plant called the Alamitos Energy Center in Long Beach, California.

The power plant, which will replace the AES Alamitos Generating Station, also includes a 100 MW battery energy storage system.

"We're excited to move forward to the construction phase of this important project and look forward to working with the community every step of the way," said Stephen O'Kane, president of AES Alamitos Energy LLC.

The original plan for the power plant was nearly twice as large, with a capacity of 1,040 MW of natural gas power, and a 300 MW battery system.

The new plant will be about half the size of the existing one, and will no longer use ocean water for cooling purposes.
